 A Man of Awesome Power - Synopsis

Naguib Mahfouz short story A Man of Awesome Power explores how power can uplift or destroy, depending on how it is used. The protagonist, Tayyib al-Mahdi, is a retired man who lives a quiet life. One night, he dreams of a glowing figure who tells him that God has chosen him and given him special powers. At first, he ignores the dream, but he later discovers that it was real when he is able to change television channels without touching the remote.

Tayyib begins to experiment with his new ability. At times, he acts irresponsibly, such as when he angrily wishes a rude taxi driver into an accident. However, he also uses the power to benefit society by repairing potholes, removing garbage, and correcting injustices. He feels useful and secretly proud of his hidden role in improving people’s lives.

Sadly, his weakness betrays him. In a tea garden, he sees a beautiful woman and misuses his power to satisfy his lust. Immediately, the power disappears, leaving him guilty and sorrowful. The story ends on a somber note, showing that a divine gift can be lost if it is misused.
